Our Story

At Renewal, we are a collection of independent organizations founded by Carol Newell. Our journey began when Carol decided to direct her entire inheritance to stimulate environmental and social change for the greater good. This experiment, born from a conviction that our societal systems can and must be transformed, has led to the creation of a triple bottom line economy. Over the past three decades, we have worked tirelessly to foster healthy social, ecological, and economic environments that benefit everyone.

Our Mission

In 1991, Carol anonymously started putting the powerful tools of business and philanthropy to work in the creation of a triple bottom line economy. This initiative became publicly known as Renewal, providing investments, grants, and collaborations in support of long-term societal solutions in British Columbia and beyond.

Our Vision

Our vision is to influence the shift away from an economy that prioritizes maximum financial returns, regardless of the planetary cost. Instead, we aim to create an economy based on the health and well-being of communities, where the safeguarding of whole ecosystem health is seamlessly integrated into all economic activities. We are committed to prioritizing the long-term well-being of future generations and influencing our present choices and circumstances to achieve this goal.

Our Strategy

Employing a three-pronged approach of investment, charitable grant making, and cross-sector collaboration, Renewal has leveraged capital to create a new model for change. We believe that the many independent actors and organizations, across the for-profit and non-profit spectrum, will best gain strength through interdependent relationships of trust and respect.

Our Investments

For over a decade, Renewal invested in change by placing early stage capital into some of the best entrepreneurs in North America. Our investments span a range of sectors, from social purpose real estate to environmental sustainability. We have worked with organizations such as Endswell Foundation, which funded environmental and sustainability projects in British Columbia.

Our Collaborations

Renewal has worked to build, activate, and leverage progressive networks through collaborations with organizations such as the Social Venture Institute, a capacity-building event for leaders serving the greater good. We have also collaborated with networks across North America, extending our influence and collaborative value.

Our Goal

Our broader intention has always been to prioritize the greater good of society when sitting in the seat of privilege with access to wealth and influence. We strive to use our resources to support innovative solutions that benefit everyone and the planet.
