Setting the Standard for Security and Investigations
At Norfolk Osteopathy, we believe that the body is a functional unit, comprising an integration of body, mind, and spirit. We recognize that the body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. Our approach is rooted in the principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function. As a place of manual medicine, we understand that each person is unique, comprising many intricately related systems. Our goal is to get to the root of pain and dysfunction, treating each individual with care and compassion.
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a manual medicine, both an art and a science, that treats the whole person. It realizes that each person is an individual, a unique collection of systems that are highly interrelated. Osteopathy is based upon the principle that our physiology (how our body works) is an expression of our anatomy (our structure). Broken, misaligned structure means poorly functioning tissues, dysfunction, and pain. Our structure/anatomy is a process - it is a dynamic situation - rather than a static one. We are functional continuums, made from living, ever-changing tissues. Our body's systems (nervous, musculoskeletal, lymphatic, physiological, organ, energetic) are interrelated at all levels, and effective treatment is based upon this understanding, and proper assessment of the situation at hand.
Our Services
At Norfolk Osteopathy, we offer a range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. Our treatments are based on the principles of osteopathy, and our goal is to relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore health, vitality, and optimal function. Our services include:
- Osteopathic Manual Manipulation: a gentle, non-invasive treatment that seeks to address the root cause of pain and dysfunction.
- Muscle Energy Techniques: which release contracted muscles by alternately stretching and making them work against resistance.
- Counter-strain Techniques: which achieve release of restriction by placing the affected joint or muscle in a position of comfort, while applying a "Counter" stretch to the antagonists of the tight muscles.
- Functional Techniques: which involve gentle mobilization of joints in a way that "probes" barriers to normal movement until a way is found through the restriction levels in order to maximize safety and minimize patient discomfort.
- Cranial Osteopathy Techniques: which are very gentle release techniques honouring the fact that the central nervous system is housed in a fluid medium encased by meningeal tissues.
- Visceral Techniques: Organ specific fascial mobilization and the restoration of inherent movement.
- Stretching Techniques: elongation of tissues, which is integral to movement.
- Articulation Techniques: which mobilize joints by being passively taken through their range of motion.
