Empowering the Profession, Enhancing the Community

The Newfoundland and Labrador Massage Therapists Association (NLMTA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the practice of Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) in our province. Our organization is comprised of a board of dedicated, practicing RMTs who volunteer their time and expertise to further the profession. Our board is elected annually at our Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is held in the fall.

Our Foundation

In 2002, the Act Respecting the Practice of Massage Therapy was first proclaimed, followed by the more recent Massage Therapy Act in 2005. This legislation outlines the necessary steps for a person to legally practice massage therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador. In order to practice as an RMT in our province, one must apply and maintain good standing with the NLMTA, as well as the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador.

What We Do

The NLMTA serves two primary functions. Firstly, we offer professional liability insurance to our members, which is a legal requirement for practicing RMTs in Newfoundland and Labrador. Secondly, we provide a range of support services to our members, including advertising, website management, and answering membership queries. We are committed to guiding and supporting our members throughout their career as RMTs.

Working Towards the Future

As a founding member of the Canadian Massage Therapist Alliance, we are proud to be part of a broader network of massage therapists committed to advancing the profession within Canada. Through regular board meetings and collaboration with our members, we constantly work towards supporting and growing the future of RMT in Newfoundland and Labrador.

About Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a versatile and effective treatment option that can be used alone or in conjunction with other medical, pharmaceutical, or physical modalities. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including soft tissue injuries and dysfunctions, chronic painful conditions, and many different stressful illnesses. Massage therapy can benefit individuals of all ages and backgrounds, from infants to seniors, and from office workers to sports enthusiasts.

Services

Our members are trained to use a wide range of techniques to affect the circulatory, musculoskeletal, nervous, and respiratory systems. Hydrotherapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, instruction in proper breathing, and assessment and correction of posture are just a few of the tools that our members regularly employ in their treatment protocols. Whether you are looking to improve relaxation and reduce stress or seeking treatment for a specific condition, our members are committed to providing compassionate and effective care.
