Interesting Facts About Clocks

A clock is an instrument used to indicate, keep, and coordinate time. The word "clock" is derived from the Celtic words "clagan" and "clocca, " which mean "bell." Traditionally, a silent instrument without such a mechanism has been known as a timepiece. Today, a "clock" often refers to any device used for measuring and displaying time, with watches and other portable timepieces distinguished from clocks. Clocks are one of the oldest human inventions, initially developed to measure shorter intervals of time than natural units like the day, lunar month, and year. Various physical processes have been employed over the centuries, culminating in the clocks of today. The study of timekeeping is known as horology.

About Us

Willem and Viveca's fascination with clocks led them to turn their hobby into a profession, opening one of Toronto's only antique clock shops. After years of collecting, their home was filled with more than 300 working antique clocks ticking, tocking, and chiming away. The couple decided to share their passion by moving their clocks into a showroom on Avenue Road near Old Orchard Grove in North Toronto. Our showroom carries a vast array of antique timepieces, including Pequegnat, Ansonia, Gilbert, Marti, Japy Freres, Meissen, Sevres, Kienzle, Haas, Elliot, Staartklok, Boulle, Morbier, and other leading names in the industry. We specialize in French clocks, considering them "works of art" due to their ornate design and high-quality craftsmanship. Our inventory includes table or mantelpiece clocks, wall clocks, grandfather clocks, Cartel clocks, Wag on the walls, Carriage clocks, Traveler clocks, bracket clocks, and porcelain clocks.

Beyond selling clocks, we also provide repair and maintenance services, including lubricating inner gears and replacing missing parts. We even make house calls to ensure a clock is properly set up and placed in our clients' homes. Our showroom features many other decorative pieces that Viveca collects, such as mirrors, dinner sets, music boxes, Majolica, Royal Doulton, Minton, Dresden, and Meissen, as well as some fine English and French furniture pieces.
