The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Society is a non-profit organization that has been proudly serving the community since 1972. Our vision is to connect our community to the heart of agriculture and its history, and our mission is to provide facilities, programs, and events that bring people together to celebrate agriculture's influence on the past, present, and future of our community.
Our History
The Society has a rich history that dates back to 1972, when a group of dedicated volunteer members came together to contribute to the community. One of our earliest achievements was the construction of the Spruce Grove "Agrena, " which is now a hockey and curling rink. We also hosted an annual Agra Fair for 25 years, which grew to become Western Canada's largest Agricultural Fair. In 1995, we embarked on a project to save the last surviving Grain Elevator in Spruce Grove from demolition, and it has since become a tourist destination that showcases the agricultural roots of the area.
Our Services
Today, we offer a range of services and facilities that cater to the needs of our community. Our Grain Elevator Museum is a Provincial Historic Resource and a functioning museum that is visited by thousands of people from all over the world. We also have a Community Garden, Archives, and Farmers' Market that are open to the public. Our Spruce Grove Archives preserve the documented history of the district, and our Community Garden provides a space for residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
Events and Programs
We host a range of events and programs throughout the year that celebrate agriculture and its influence on our community. Our annual summer fund-raising events, such as the Flapjacks at the Tracks Community Pancake Breakfast, the Farm & Heritage Carnival, and the Harvest Fair, are very popular among community members and visitors. We also have a Winter Blooms Gala, which is a special event that brings people together to celebrate the beauty of winter. Our events are designed to be fun and educational, and they provide an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate our community.
Preservation and Education
One of our significant projects is the preservation of the Grain Elevator and the restored Water Tower. We are committed to protecting these historic landmarks and educating the public about their significance. Our "Paint to Protect" project, which is scheduled for 2024, is a major initiative that aims to protect the Grain Elevator from further deterioration. We also offer educational programs that teach people about the history of agriculture in our community and its importance to our daily lives.
Community Involvement
We are proud to be an integral part of the Spruce Grove community, and we rely on the support of our members, volunteers, and sponsors to continue our work. We believe that by working together, we can make a positive impact on our community and preserve our agricultural heritage for future generations.
