Our Mission and History

Smithers Exploration Group (SEG) has been a leading advocate for the mineral industry in Northwest British Columbia for over 50 years. Established in 1971, our organization has grown from a small group of prospectors and geologists to become a respected regional exploration association with almost 500 members. Our mission is to advance the exploration and mining sectors in northwestern British Columbia, fostering a collaborative environment that benefits both our members and the wider community.

Throughout our history, SEG has been committed to providing a platform for industry professionals to share knowledge, experience, and best practices. We have achieved this through a range of activities, including our annual Exploration and Mining Directory, which showcases the companies, prospectors, and geologists that make up the backbone of our industry. This popular directory is available as an interactive PDF and provides a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn more about the mineral industry in our region.

Services and Activities

As a membership-based organization, SEG offers a range of services and activities designed to benefit our members and the broader community. Our annual directory is just one example of this commitment to promoting the mineral industry. We also provide a platform for our members to network, share their expertise, and access resources and training opportunities.

SEG is also proud to partner with other organizations to support the development of the minerals industry in northwestern British Columbia. We work closely with the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AME BC) and participate in various committees and initiatives that advocate for the interests of our industry. Additionally, we partner with the Northwest Community College School of Exploration and Mining, which provides valuable training and education for graduates looking to enter the workforce in our industry.

Community Engagement

At SEG, we recognize the importance of engaging with the communities and organizations that support our industry. We have a long history of reaching out to schools, community organizations, and First Nations groups to provide information about the minerals industry and its role in the regional economy. This includes outreach initiatives, such as our popular Minerals Education Program, which aims to educate students about the importance of geology and mineral exploration.

SEG also stages several annual events that bring together industry professionals, community members, and stakeholders. Our Fall Golf Tournament is a popular event that provides a relaxed setting for networking and socializing. We also host a range of educational seminars, workshops, and lectures that address topics of interest to our members and the broader community.

Membership

Membership in SEG is open to everyone, regardless of profession or experience. Our one-time membership fee is just $5, making it an affordable and accessible way to connect with the mineral industry in northwestern British Columbia.
