Building Skills for a Stronger Future
The College of Carpenters and Allied Trades (CCAT) is a jointly trusted union-employer construction skills training school that has been serving the educational needs of Carpenters Local 27 members and their employers since 1986. Our mission is to provide high-quality pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, health and safety, and continuing education courses to thousands of students every year.
Background
CCAT was established to address the recruitment and educational needs of Carpenters Local 27 members and their employers. We offer a wide variety of carpentry trades-related programs that are designed to equip students with the necessary skills to excel in their chosen fields. Our programs are developed and delivered in collaboration with industry experts, ensuring that our students receive the most up-to-date and relevant training available.
Governance
The CCAT is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of labour representatives from the Carpenters' Local 27 Union and employer representatives from the General Contractors' Section Toronto. Two separate joint employer/labour committees, the Carpenters Joint Local Apprenticeship Committee and the Floor Covering Installer Joint Local Apprenticeship Committee, oversee all activities related to the carpentry and floor covering apprenticeship programs offered by CCAT. The carpenters' apprenticeship system in Ontario's unionized construction sector is a model of employer/labour cooperation that is essential for the industry's future competitiveness and productivity.
Facilities
CCAT's two state-of-the-art facilities in Woodbridge total approximately 113,000 square feet of "hands-on" shop and classroom areas. Our facilities are customized in accordance with the theoretical and practical requirements of the educational programs and include fully site-simulated carpentry shops, electronic classrooms, computer laboratories, a wood working machine shop, a welding shop, a floor covering installer shop, and an ICRA Best Practices in Healthcare Construction laboratory. These facilities enable us to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for our students.
Pre-apprenticeship
CCAT offers a pre-apprenticeship program in Formwork Carpentry designed to equip new entrants into General Carpentry Apprenticeship with market-ready employment skills upon completion of the seven-week course. This program provides students with a strong foundation in carpentry principles, building codes, and safety regulations.
Apprenticeship
CCAT is the largest Training Delivery Agency of General Carpentry Apprenticeship in the province of Ontario, with well over 2,000 Carpentry Apprentices signed to its Local Apprenticeship Committee. We provide all three levels of in-school training (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced) to over 450 carpenter apprentices a year.
In addition to General Carpentry Apprenticeship, CCAT is also the largest Training Delivery Agency on behalf of MAESD for Floor Covering Apprenticeship in the province. We offer both levels of in-school training (Basic and Advanced) for Floor Covering Apprenticeship, providing students with the knowledge and skills required to become certified Floor Covering Installers.
Health and Safety and Continuing Education Courses
CCAT offers over 38 health and safety and continuing education courses to Carpenters Local Union 27 members in good standing. These courses are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. Topics covered include fall protection, scaffolding, first aid, and WHMIS.
At CCAT, we are committed to providing high-quality construction skills training to our students. Our state-of-the-art facilities, experienced instructors, and comprehensive training programs enable us to deliver the knowledge and skills our students need to excel in their chosen fields.
Lackluster Program
The reviewers have mixed opinions about the CCAT apprenticeship program. Illya Roberts gave the program a 1-star rating, stating that it needs a revamp, with older instructors and a stagnant structure. The program is seen as unappealing, especially to younger people.
Positive Experience
On the other hand, Forex Lens and Daniel Sanguinetti both gave the program a 5-star rating. Forex Lens found the staff to be great, making the program 100% recommended for those looking to enter the carpentry industry. Daniel Sanguinetti commended the program for being affordable, with a low startup cost of approximately $1000. He also appreciated the opportunity to quickly earn money back through the work portion of the apprenticeship. Additionally, he highlighted the availability of free Health & safety and continuing education courses, as well as the helpful instructor and admin staff.
Conclusion
The CCAT apprenticeship program seems to have its pros and cons. While Forex Lens and Daniel Sanguinetti had a positive experience, Illya Roberts was highly critical of the program. The program's structure and staff may need to be revamped to appeal to a wider range of people.
