Igloo Building Supplies Group Ltd. has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the 1950s. Founded in Hay River, a small Northern town on the shores of Canada's Great Slave Lake, Igloo began as a hardware store that quickly became the go-to company for delivering any order, anywhere, on time. With the Mackenzie Highway and the Canadian National Railroad ending in Hay River, barges, boats, planes, and snowmobiles carried supplies from the town to remote Northern communities, all the way to Tuktoyaktuk. Known as the "Hub of the North, " Hay River was the perfect place for a building supplies company, and Igloo thrived in this harsh and unforgiving climate.

In 1984, Don Stewart's son Barry took a trip to Edmonton, Alberta, to explore the possibility of opening a southern location. Six weeks turned into six months, and Barry never returned home to Hay River. Instead, he established an Edmonton operation that has since grown to become Edmonton's largest supplier of building materials. Although the climate in Edmonton was not as harsh as Canada's North, Igloo quickly discovered the demand for a company that could deliver quality building materials, anywhere, on time.

In 1994, Igloo purchased the building supply company, Northern Eauclaire, and one year later, opened a truss-making plant in Edmonton. Today, Igloo has operations in Yellowknife, Cornwall, and Edmonton. Barry Stewart's dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed, as he was the recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004. This award recognizes business leaders who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success through innovation, financial performance, and personal commitment.
