The Artists

Tom Alway and Peter Blais are the creative forces behind the Maritime Painted Saltbox Fine Art Gallery. Both artists have a deep connection to Nova Scotia, with family roots that stretch back generations. Tom's paternal grandmother was born in Greenfield, Lunenburg County, and Peter's maternal grandfather was a Cape Bretonner who became the first Park Superintendent of Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

The artists first settled in Mahone Bay, Lunenburg County, where they purchased and restored a heritage cape and established the Maritime Painted Saltbox Gallery. The gallery was initially set up in a room in the heritage cape, which was restored to its original look and featured a large hearth. In the early years, the artists' focus was divided between their fine art and the design and fabrication of heritage reproduction furniture for folks who were in the process of restoring older homes.

Today, the artists' focus is solely on their fine art, and the Maritime Painted Saltbox Gallery is a testament to their dedication and talent. Visitors to the gallery can view stunning collections of paintings that capture the beauty of Nova Scotia's landscapes, seascapes, and wildlife.
