At Thurber, we take pride in being a consulting company that specializes in geotechnical, environmental, construction materials, and testing services. With offices in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, we have a strong presence across Canada, allowing us to understand the diverse and complex geological and environmental conditions across the country. Our firm was founded in 1957 by Reginald Cameron Thurber, who had a passion for soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Since then, we have expanded our capabilities and expanded our presence eastwards into Alberta, and today, we have over 300 employees located in 9 offices.

Our History

Our journey began in 1957 in Victoria, BC, where our founder, Reginald Cameron Thurber, established a firm to provide services in soil mechanics and foundation engineering, primarily for highways and railways. Tragedy struck in 1968, when Reg's plane crashed in the Rogers Pass area, resulting in his disappearance. After an extensive search, Reg's plane was finally found in 2006.

Following the crash, the company went through a period of contraction, but eventually, it began to grow slowly. New offices were opened in Edmonton in 1970, Vancouver in the mid-1970s, and Calgary in the early 1980s. The firm was reorganized in 1989 to form Thurber Engineering Ltd., and the Toronto office was opened shortly after. Today, we have a strong presence in numerous market sectors across Canada, providing a diverse range of geotechnical, environmental, and materials testing and engineering services.
