The Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Arts Society has a rich history that dates back to the early 1970s. It all began when residents of Armstrong found themselves powerless to save an historic building from being demolished. This event sparked the creation of the Armstrong Spallumcheen Historical Society, which was incorporated in 1974. Initially, the Society's collection consisted mainly of historical photographs. Almost a decade later, the City of Armstrong offered the Society space in part of a machine storage building, and in 1983, the Society opened a museum to the public. In 1988, with the help of a gift from Rusty Freeze, the Society expanded into the rest of the building and added an Art Gallery, renaming itself the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Arts Society.
Over the years, the museum and art gallery have been the result of the dedication of many volunteers from the community who continue to be actively involved in its operation. The museum is located in historic downtown Armstrong, in a building that has a rich history of its own. The first building on this site was moved from Lansdowne circa 1892, and has since been used as a machine shop, storage facility, automobile garage, and gas station. In 2011, the facility underwent significant renovations, including fresh paint, new signage, a timber frame entrance, and a colonnade, giving the building a new yet historic look.
What We Do
At the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Arts Society, our primary objectives are to research, document, store, preserve, and make accessible Armstrong Spallumcheen artifacts and records. We respond to archival inquiries from around the world, educate visitors about the history of this region, and provide educational services to our schools. We also support local artists by exhibiting their work, supply a venue for a drop-in painting group, sponsor art-related workshops, and attract tourists and host tour groups interested in the art and history of Armstrong and Spallumcheen.
In addition to these activities, we provide access to very low-cost used books at our annual book sale. The book sale is a popular event that takes place year-round, and we accept book donations at any time. Our museum and art gallery are open to the public from May 2nd to December 30th, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, except on statutory holidays.
