Mixed Experience
CAMH, formerly known as 1001 Queen St. West or the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, has undergone efforts to rebrand and address the stigma surrounding mental illness. While some individuals have had positive experiences, others have had negative encounters.
Inpatient Experience
Some reviewers have praised the inpatient areas, such as porches and walking areas within units. However, one reviewer reported difficulty accessing a CPAP machine and mentioned that this may be an area for improvement in future hospital plans.
Staff and Services
Some reviewers have expressed gratitude for the compassionate care they received from staff, particularly Dr. Wayne Baici and Dr. Amit Rotem. However, others have reported receiving poor advice from staff and feeling treated like criminals.
Waiting Times and Admission
Reviewers have reported varying wait times for admission, with some expressing frustration with the lengthy process. One reviewer was denied admission multiple times, despite their family's efforts to drive them 200km each way.
Communication
Some reviewers have praised the clinic's communication, particularly with regards to their care and aftercare. However, others have reported difficulties with communication, including a lack of information from the emergency room.
Waiting Areas and Security
One reviewer reported a concerning incident in the discharge area, where a man approached them and asked if they could identify someone in a car. Another reviewer felt that people in the general waiting area were treated like criminals.
DBT Program and Accommodation
One reviewer reported waiting for over 8 months for a spot in a DBT program, only to be told that it was only available during limited hours. Another reviewer was referred to expensive therapists and felt discouraged from pursuing treatment.
Gender Identity Clinic
One reviewer had a positive experience at the Adult Gender Identity Clinic, praising the care and communication from Dr. Wayne Baici.
