Empowering Young Hockey Players, Building Stronger Communities

NDG Minor Hockey Association has a rich history that dates back to the 1930s, when it started as a loose association of park leagues run by the city. The association has undergone significant changes over the years, evolving to become the prominent minor hockey organization it is today. Our mission is to promote the development of community minor hockey, providing a platform for children of all ages to participate in the sport they love.

Our Story

In the early days, hockey in NDG was played primarily outdoors, with teams formed at local parks. The city scheduled inter-park games, while individual parks organized house-league games. This system was in place until the construction of Confederation Arena (now known as the Doug Harvey Arena) in 1966. For the next six to seven years, hockey was played both indoors and outdoors. In 1973, the local park associations came together to form the NDG Sports Association, which later became NDG Minor Hockey. However, each individual park continued to run its own teams, with competition between parks being fierce.

Merging of Park Teams

It wasn't until 1985 that the park teams began to merge, aiming to ensure balance among teams and increase competitiveness with teams from other parts of the city. The Novices were the first to merge, followed by the Atoms, and eventually, all park teams were integrated into the NDG Minor Hockey Association. Paul Carrier was the first president of the organization, which was built on the dedication and hard work of volunteers. Notable individuals who played a crucial role in the organization's growth include Bill Hurst, Ernie Lidbetter, Norman Trudeau, Jim Slater, Franck Mack, and Jack Wallace.

Competitive Hockey

In the early 1970s, it was recognized that there was sufficient talent in NDG to form AA teams. This vision became a reality in 1974 with the formation of the legendary Maroons. Dick Brady was the first president of the Maroons, and Pierre Robin and Bill Hurst later served as presidents, both actively involved in double letter hockey. The Maroons achieved success both on the competitive level and in developing players, with notable examples including Sergio Momesso, Brian Johnson, and many others.
