Our Story

At Pinebrook Golf and Country Club, we're proud to have a rich history that spans over 70 years. Our journey began in 1886 when Lieutenant Colonel Ernest G. May first arrived in what was then the District of Alberta in the Northwest Territories of Canada. May's vision was to build a home for his fiancee, Eliza Mary Paice, who waited in England. The property, located near Springbank, boasted beautiful trees, a creek, and stunning views of the mountains. May quickly sent for Miss Eliza, and they were married, filing a claim to purchase the land from the Hudson's Bay Company.

Over the decades, the property passed through several hands, including Major 'Dick' May, who built the original golf course on the property with designer Otto Anderson in 1947. However, Dick's dreams of improving the golf course were never realized, as he became severely handicapped by arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair. Unmarried and often lonely, Dick spoke of his dreams for the golf course to his closest neighbor, Wilbur Griffith.

When Dick passed away in 1965, two nephews inherited the property, but they showed little interest in improving the golf course. The course became run-down, and it was only through Wilbur Griffith's perseverance that the course was rebuilt in 1975. Griffith completely renovated the course, renaming it Pinebrook Golf & Winter Club. Clayton Robb was hired as the first staff member as Head Golf Professional in March 1975. The Pinebrook Golf & Winter Club has been owned and operated by Wilbur Griffith until 1980, when it was purchased by a group of local businessmen.

• Golf Shop: Our fully-staffed Golf Shop offers a wide range of golfing essentials, including clubs, balls, and equipment.

• Restaurants and Bars: Our clubhouse features two restaurants, the lounge bar, and the patio, offering a variety of cuisines and drinks.

• Event Hosting: Our clubhouse is the perfect venue for weddings, corporate events, and private functions. Our catering team can accommodate events of all sizes and styles.
