We are a full-service architecture and interior design firm based in Edmonton, Canada, with a broad range of experience across Western Canada. Our expertise in adaptive re-use, urban place-making, and infill development has made us the preferred choice among developers, both private and public. Our work stands the test of time, but our process is nimble, allowing us to move quickly to adapt to new challenges and roadblocks, while also taking the time to draw inspiration from multiple sources.
Our History
HSEA was founded in 2007 by three friends - Marty Hodgson, Roger Schilf, and Ian Evans - whose shared passion for design brought them together around a table at Albert's Pancake House on 124th Street. Today, we are still located on 124th Street, and while we have grown a little, we remain committed to working together as a team to brainstorm, solve problems, and create projects both we and our clients can be proud of. Our work is primarily centered in Alberta, but we have also completed projects in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
Our People
Our people are the heart of HSEA. We are a collaborative, open-minded design studio with an amazing group of talented and fun individuals, many of whom have been with us since the beginning. Our team is structured to encourage interaction and promote mentorship through the sharing of ideas, interactive and inclusive problem-solving, and the sharing of knowledge. We believe that the diversity of experience, thought, and culture of our team members allows us to create projects that are meaningful for our clients and their users.
Our Services
At HSEA, we specialize in architecture and interior design services for a range of sectors, including automotive retail, institutional, industrial, office, recreational, and multi-family residential. Our expertise in adaptive re-use has allowed us to transform abandoned buildings into vibrant boutique retail destinations and lively community hubs, such as the Oliver Exchange. We have also completed the North District, a mixed-use commercial development offering retail, restaurant, medical, and professional services. We are proud of our work on the University of Alberta Student Residence, East Campus Village - Nipisiy House, and our addition and renovation of the Crawford Block (est. 1912) in Old Strathcona.
Our team is committed to creating spaces and places that people want to be, regardless of the size of the project. We approach each project with the goal of finding a unique point of view that enriches people's lives and communities. We believe that architecture is more than just building structures; it is about creating experiences that connect people and bring them together.
If you're looking for a collaborative and open-minded design studio that values diversity and inclusivity, HSEA may be the right fit for you. We are always looking for talented technologists, architects, designers, and project managers to join our team.
