History and Mission of SMWIA

The Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA) was founded in 1888 with a mission to protect the interests of its members and promote the growth and development of the sheet metal industry. Since its inception, the union has grown to become one of the largest and most respected in the world, representing over 150,000 workers in a range of industries.

Our mission at SMWIA is fourfold: to grow the membership with the most highly skilled workers in the industry, to secure desirable working conditions for all members, to provide them with personal growth opportunities, comfort, and security in return for their labor, and to promote a deep sense of pride in our industry.

Trades and Job Descriptions

Sheet metal workers are responsible for designing, laying out, measuring, fabricating, assembling, or repairing sheet metal products. They use a variety of tools and materials, including power shears, press brakes, drill presses, and computerized cutting equipment, to create a wide range of products.

Some sheet metal workers choose to specialize in areas such as installation, shop manufacturing, or servicing and maintenance. Others may choose to work in specialized areas, such as roofing, siding, or insulation.

General duties of a sheet metal worker may include reading engineering and architectural drawings, developing patterns for sheet metal using computer-assisted design and drafting software, operating metalworking machines and cutting equipment, fitting and joining sheet metal parts, grinding off and buffing seams, joints, and other rough surfaces, and conducting quality inspections.

Sheeter and Deckers are involved in the application of specialized sheeting, cladding, insulation, and decking products on construction projects. They work with a range of materials, including aluminum, copper, and steel, and use a variety of tools and equipment to install these products.

Training and Apprenticeship

One of the ways that we support our members is by providing them with access to top-notch training and apprenticeship programs. Our apprenticeship program is a four-year program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Apprentices learn the skills they need to succeed in the trade, from measuring and cutting sheet metal to installing and repairing complex systems.

We also offer a range of training programs and courses for our members, from basic skills development to advanced training in specialized areas. These programs are designed to help our members stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and techniques, and to prepare them for new challenges and opportunities in the trade.

Conclusion

At Sheet Metal Workers Local 409, we are proud of our rich history and tradition of service to our members. We are committed to providing our members with the best training, support, and benefits possible, and to promoting the growth and development of the sheet metal industry.
