Our Story
The Real Estate Foundation of BC is a philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing sustainable, equitable, and socially just land use across British Columbia. With a rich history dating back to 1985, we have been working tirelessly to support projects that prioritize the well-being of the environment, communities, and individuals. Our story is one of commitment, resilience, and a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding land use and real estate.
Our Approach
At REFBC, we recognize that land use and real estate practices have a profound impact on our communities and the environment. We take a holistic approach to our work, acknowledging that sustainability, equity, and social justice are inextricably linked. Our approach is built on a foundation of relationships, knowledge sharing, and collaboration with Indigenous peoples, organizations, and communities. We strive to foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, and mutual understanding, recognizing that the challenges facing our province require a collective response.
Our Commitment to Reconciliation and Strategic Plan
We acknowledge the xmkwym (Musqueam), Swxwu7mesh (Squamish), and slilwta (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, as well as First Nations across BC, on whose territories we live, work, and learn. We commit to reconciliation by listening to and learning from Indigenous peoples, supporting their leadership, and working in partnership to advance social justice and environmental sustainability. We also have a strategic plan in place, outlining our priorities and strategies for the next five years.

What We Fund
At REFBC, we support projects and initiatives that prioritize sustainability, equity, and social justice in five key areas: land use, fresh water, built environments, food sovereignty, and real estate profession. We fund projects led by non-profit organizations, community groups, and Indigenous peoples, recognizing that these groups are critical to driving positive change in our province.
Indigenous Grants Stream
Our Indigenous Grants Stream is a critical component of our programming, directed by the Indigenous Community Leaders Circle. We recognize the importance of supporting Indigenous-led projects and initiatives that prioritize the well-being of Indigenous peoples and the land.
Our Initiatives
We have several initiatives that reflect our commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability. Our Land Awards celebrate leadership in land use and real estate across BC, while our UNDRIP & REFBC initiative takes steps to uphold the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We also support impact investments, healthy watersheds initiatives, and research and collaboration projects that advance our mission and vision.
