The Durham Region Law Association (DRLA) is a private not-for-profit library situated in the heart of Oshawa, Ontario, within the Lt. Col. Samuel Sharpe D.S.O., M.P. Courthouse. With a rich history dating back to 1879, our organization has evolved to become a vital resource hub for the legal community and the public at large. Today, we stand proud with over 450 members strong, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors representing all areas of practice.

Our primary mission is to support the citation research, reference, and educational needs of our member lawyers and visiting counsel throughout Durham Region, as well as the public. We strive to provide a comprehensive range of services, resources, and facilities that cater to the diverse needs of our users. As the only research-level law library in Durham Region, we take pride in being an essential community resource hub for networking, professional, and social gatherings.

Our Services

At the DRLA, we offer a wide range of services designed to support the legal community and the public. Our Legal Research Resource Centre provides access to an extensive collection of print and digital materials, including books, journals, and online databases. Our team of skilled librarians is always available to provide research assistance, guidance, and support.

In addition to our research services, we also offer a range of facilities and resources, including a comprehensive library catalogue, e-resources, and an e-book lending library. Members can access our online catalogue, book suggestion form, and other resources, making it easier to find the information they need.

Our members come from diverse backgrounds and specialize in various areas of practice, including Aboriginal Law, Business Lawyers, Civil Lawyers, Corporate/Commercial Lawyers, Criminal Lawyers, Elder Law Lawyers, Estate Litigation Lawyers, Family Lawyers, Human Rights Lawyers, Immigration Lawyers, Labour/Employment Lawyers, Personal Injury Lawyers, Real Estate Lawyers, and Wills & Estates.

Resources for the Public

We understand that the legal system can be complex and overwhelming for the general public. That's why we offer a range of resources and information to help individuals navigate the legal process. Our website provides access to legal information and resources, including court forms, notices, and daily court lists. We also offer a will search service, and our team is always available to provide guidance and support.

Mentorship and Mental Health

At the DRLA, we recognize the importance of mentorship and mental health. Our mentorship program pairs experienced lawyers with new members, providing guidance, support, and wisdom. We also offer a mental health member assistance program, which provides access to confidential counseling services and mental health resources.
