At the Malaspina Child Development Society, we are committed to providing high-quality child care programs that foster the growth and development of each child as an individual. Our philosophy recognizes the unique needs and interests of every child, and our programs are tailored to meet those needs. We offer a range of activities designed to promote social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and creative development, and we encourage children to initiate their own activities and work at their own pace.

About Us

We are a nonprofit organization operating the Malaspina Child Care Centre and Preschool, as well as Out of School Care programs. Our organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who support us in policy and decision-making and act as a support group. We welcome participation from parents in many ways, including serving on our Board of Directors, assisting on field trips, attending meetings, participating in work parties, and assisting teachers with special projects.

Our Child Care Centre has been serving the community since 1974. Our staff are qualified Early Childhood Educators who are dedicated to providing a positive and supportive learning environment for children.

Basic Goals and Philosophy

Our main goal is to provide a learning environment that will enable a child to develop:

• A positive self-concept
• Independence
• Self-discipline (verbal expression of feelings)
• Self-expression in all areas (music, art, drama, etc.)
• Physical growth and coordination
• Awareness of health, nutrition, and safety
• An awareness of themselves and the world around them

We believe that each child is unique and has the potential to learn and grow at their own pace. We strive to provide a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where children can explore, discover, and learn.

Programs

Our programs are designed to meet the needs of children and parents in our community. We offer the following programs:

Child Care

Our Child Care program is designed for children 3-5 years of age. We practice an open-door policy in accepting children into the program. Our staff are qualified Early Childhood Educators who provide a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children. Our location is at Vancouver Island University, Building 335, 900 Fifth Street, Nanaimo, BC. Our hours of operation are from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Children bring a nutritious packed lunch and a snack for the afternoon. A morning snack is provided. Parents provide their own transportation. Playclothes are recommended.

Preschool

Our Preschool program is designed for children 3-5 years of age. Our program provides a safe, stimulating, and fun environment where children can learn and grow. Our curriculum includes art, books, music, caring for animals, drama, films, baking, sand and water play, and exercises. Our program runs from September to June, and we offer both full-time and part-time options.

Out of School Care

Our Out of School Care program is designed for school-age children. Our program provides a safe and fun environment for children after school and during school breaks. Our curriculum includes art, books, music, caring for animals, drama, films, baking, sand and water play, and exercises. Our program runs from September to June, and we offer both full-time and part-time options.
