Welcome to the James Bay Inn Art Deco Cafe & Restaurant, located in the heart of Victoria, BC. Nestled within Victoria's third oldest running hotel, the James Bay Inn, and adjacent to the JBI Pub, our restaurant has been a beloved part of the community for many years. We are proud to serve both locals and visitors from around the world, offering a family-friendly atmosphere and traditional comfort food.
After closing our doors for three months, we have emerged refreshed and renovated, with a renewed commitment to maintaining and improving our standards of safety, decor, service, and taste. We are proud to have implemented new safety measures to keep our guests and staff safe, including contact tracing, the removal of items from tables, and the installation of plexi-glass partitions.
Our Menu
At the James Bay Inn Art Deco Cafe & Restaurant, we offer a wide variety of menu items to suit every taste. Our breakfast menu, available from 7:30-11:30 daily, includes traditional oatmeal and pancakes, as well as waffles and our selection of Benedicts. Our lunch menu, available from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, features soups, sandwiches, burgers, and stir frys, with daily specials to tempt you. Our dinner menu, available from 4:30 pm - 9:00 pm, includes a range of entrees and a dinner special available seven nights a week.
We are proud to offer a kids menu, complete with coloring, maze puzzles, and crayons to keep even the fussiest eaters happy. We also offer a seniors selections menu, with traditional comfort food dishes like liver and onions, veal cutlets, chicken pot pie, and egg salad sandwiches. Our dessert menu, combined with our daily cheesecake selection, offers a delectable treat for every guest.
Safety Measures
At the James Bay Inn Art Deco Cafe & Restaurant, the safety of our guests and staff is our top priority. We have implemented a number of safety measures to ensure that every visitor can dine with us comfortably and safely. Visitors must wait to be seated and provide contact tracing information upon arrival. We have removed all cups, condiments, and cutlery from tables, and will bring everything you need to your table. In between booth seating that cannot be separated by a distance of 2 meters, we have installed 7 foot plexi-glass partitions.

Front of house positions include servers, hosts, and bussers, while back of house positions include cooks and dishwashers. Atmosphere and Service
This restaurant has an art deco meets 1950's American diner decor. The staff is generally friendly and attentive, with a few exceptions. The service can be a bit lacking, with servers disappearing after placing food on the table and failing to provide drink refills. However, some servers like Conner and Jamie are very personable and provide excellent service.
Food Quality and Options
The menu is varied, with several options available for different courses and senior dinners at reasonable prices. The breakfast menu is quite extensive, and swapping sides for fruit bowls is a great option. The food is generally of fair quality, with some dishes being more successful than others. The shrimp on risotto and pork ribs are delicious, but the salmon can be dry and the julienne veggies sparse. The steak and salmon are also highly recommended.
Overall Experience
The restaurant provides a nice atmosphere and professional service, making it a great place to start or end the day in Victoria. While the food quality can be inconsistent, there are plenty of options to choose from, and the staff is generally friendly and attentive. The restaurant's location, about a 10-minute walk from downtown, adds to its charm.
